Fortune Tellers I Ching vs
The Book of Change
Before we go on, I need to clarify between two very different forms of I Ching. One method very popular in the western world is known as “Book of Change”. Both King Wen and Confucius compiled this book. King Wen was the first Emperor of the Chou Dynasty who lived around 1000 BC, and Confucius was a scholar. Between a ruler and a scholar, their Book of Change centered around morality, politics and philosophy. In its day, this important treasure of Chinese culture was used to maintain some social order, rather than for divining the future. Though however great their contribution to I Ching was through their wide promotion of the study, it also detracted from the importance of I Ching through deviating the subject from it’s original scientific nature.
The second style of I Ching is the Fortune Tellers I Ching. As with Book of Change, it is based on a system of trigrams and hexagrams. These trigrams were invented by a man named Fu Hsi who lived around 4500 BC. These 8 trigrams are symbols of natural phenomenon that Fu Hsi observed - Heaven, Earth, Fire, Water, Mountain, Thunder, Wind and Lake. These trigrams could be considered as a primitive from of data bank, storing information, and were created using the concept of yin and yang.
Reverting back to King Wen, in order for the trigrams to reveal more information, King Wen then stacked one trigram on top of another, forming a total of 64 hexagrams. The interpretations of the changes between each hexagram then became the Book of Change.
The Fortune Tellers technique was first invented by a man called Keng Fong, who lived in the Han Dynasty around 206 BC. Using this style of I Ching, one can accurately divine answers about aspects of life including money, wife, husband, status, power, job, relationships, parents, homes, study, children, creativity, pets, brothers, sisters, colleagues and friends. Chinese Astrology, or Four Pillars of Destiny also covers these aspects of our lives in very precise detail.
So the positive power of the Fortune Tellers I Ching is that focus can be centered on certain areas of the question, enabling us to gather insight and clarity that just isn’t available with the Book of Change style of I Ching.
