The five elements and their qualities

 

Metal – metal symbolises autumn and strength. Its nature represents solidity and the ability to contain objects. Its shape is round, like the rounded top of a mountain, a dome.

Metal people are very good leaders, often more concerned with friend s than family.

Yang metal can be dangerous and destructive like heavy metal used to make machinery and artillery. Yin metal is delicate and intricate like jewellery.

Metal colours are white, silver, gold.

It often represents the business world.

Metal is strongest in sound.

Metal relates to our breathing organs – skin, nose, lungs, and our hair and nails.


Water – water symbolises winter

Yang water can be chaotic and untamed, with wild energy and drive like the ocean. Yin water, can be deep, still, dark and introspective like a still stagnant river. Yang water and yin water people are very clever. Yang water people have a much higher energy drive with a open outlook .Yin water people can be surprisingly cunning, extremely clever with the ability to hide their inner most feelings.

Water colours are black or very deep navy blues and wavy, unusual shapes meandering patterns.

It often represents cafes, restaurants, drinking places, meeting places.

Water is strongest in running water.

Water represents our immune system, kidneys, reproductive system, bone marrow.



Wood – symbolises spring. Its nature is of growth, pioneering with the ability to overcome odds. Innovative and enterprising.

Yang wood people are strong like an oak tree, with little ability to bend or be flexible. Yin wood people are moderate, flexible and able to compromise. Many yin wood people are very good with handy crafts and often have long slender fingers and hands.

Wood colours are green and wood itself, and is represented by long rectangular shapes.

Wood is strongest in wood itself.

Wood represents our bones and liver.



Fire – symbolises summer, fire and heat. Illumination, knowledge, and promotion of activity.

Yang fire people are warm and glow with happiness. As such can make friends very easily. They explode and let their feelings out, then can move on.

Yin fire people are more introspective and their emotions flicker like a candle flame, as such are more unstable and unpredictable.

Fire is strongest in colour.

Fire colours are bright reds and hot pinks. Fire shapes are triangles, and any shapes with pointed tops.

Fire represents our heart, blood flow, circulation.

It often represents the finance industry.


Earth – symbolises the nurturing environment that allows seeds to develop and grow. Represents solidity, strength, stability caring and balance.

Yang earth people are caring and grounded, reliable and sometimes resistant to change. Yin earth people are also stable and balanced, but are more able to compromise and make changes in their lives.

Earth is strongest in form

Earth colours are orange, yellows and browns.

Earth shape is square.

Earth represents our cells, tissues, muscles and digestive organs.
