“The standard of success in life isn't the things. It isn't the money or the stuff - it is absolutely the amount of joy you feel".

What is Feng Shui?

Feng shui is the life force chi that travels along mountain ranges and land, is dispersed by wind, and stops at the boundary of water.

Working with feng shui involves working with energies from earth, man and the heavens that mingle together and create life force here on our earth.

Having been relatively unknown in the western world, the concept of chi is fast becoming a household topic. The cornerstone of eastern philosophies for thousands of years, chi is the life force of all animate things. The heat of the sun, the light of the moon, the weather systems, and the driving force within each of us.

Energy cannot be seen, but we feel it, and utilise it everyday. The suns rays although we cannot see them feel fabulous when they shine on us, however too much can burn us. Currents of electricity and radio waves cannot be seen, but are useful and can be harmful at the same time. Even though these currents are unseen, we know how to make the most of this type of energy, and obvious ways to avoid its dangerous impact on our health.

In the same way, the chi of the earth can be harnessed to maximise the helpful energy available to us, and reduce the harmful energies that exist. Getting the “feng shui right”, is about balancing the energies that are present all around and within us.

Chi and the elements

Feng shui energies are based on elements. Likewise, traditional Chinese medicine is based upon the same elements and they are metal, water, wood, fire and earth. In traditional Chinese medicine, to achieve optimum health, balance of the elements in our bodies is needed. In feng shui, to achieve a harmonious home with flowing chi, or a dynamic and financially successful business, balance of the elements within our buildings is necessary.

These five elements are dynamic and constantly interact with each other. There is both a creative and a destructive cycle between the elements where they either support and give strength to one another, or weaken and diminish the strength of one another. These two cycles are represented by yin and yang, and although opposing, they exist together, as interdependent opposites.

We know that when we eat well, sleep well, enjoy our work and play, then we achieve balance within our bodies and a balanced lifestyle. If one area of our lives is dominant, another area will suffer. We can then become run down and out of balance, leaving our selves open illness of varying degrees.

In our homes, where chi flows smoothly, we can achieve and better maintain mental and physical health. The occupants of the house can better maintain a positive and enjoyable passage through life. When chi becomes sluggish, everyday obstacles occur, and the long-term prospects of the occupants can become detrimental.

In an office where chi flows freely, employees will be comfortable, happy and supportive of one another. In this environment projects are easily completed, new business can be won, and money will flow smoothly. Where chi gets stuck, disharmony occurs, obstacles are a regular occurrence, and business will not flourish.

Qualities of metal, water, wood, fire and earth are listed here.
